Language and Typefaces.

So my love of languages (although I've yet to learn any besides English) has somehow gotten meshed together with my love of typography, and today I was thinking and I've decided that my new question of the week/month/year is: How many different typefaces do other languages have? I'm not talking Spanish, Italian or French. I'm talking Arabic, Russian, Chinese and all those other languages who don't use our alphabet.. who don't use "our" typefaces... Their letters/symbols are so different from ours that they must have their own, right? Which means they have designers who design them. And just based on how many typefaces WE have... I'm guessing they probably have just as many?

I'm just curious about these things. And I'll probably never do the research because I have real problems to worry about... but it's fun to wonder sometimes.
